There’s a long-standing story, true or not, which is one of the driving forces for the mission statement of Future Living Enterprises, LLC. It seems that back in the 1960’s, NASA had spent millions of dollars developing a pen for  U.S.  astronauts. This pen could write upside down, in zero gravity, underwater, or in the extreme cold or the hot temperatures of outer space in the vicinity of the earth. Many months of research and about 10 million dollars later (about $84 million in 2020) they did come up with such a pen. This was such a major accomplishment that the pen was featured and sold in the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City.

The story doesn’t end there. Given the same problem a couple of years later, a 9th grade science class produced an entirely different writing instrument that could do all those things, not for 10 million dollars, but for about two cents. For you see, they didn’t invent anything at all. They just used a pencil!

The lesson of this story is one of many that describes our philosophy to producing environmentally compliant products for consumers. We believe that complexity is not necessarily the ultimate answer; often, simplicity can be a much better choice.
